What if the reason your content feels exhausting isn’t that you’re doing it wrong, but that the entire platform was built to make you disappear the moment you stop feeding it?

This week I’m talking with Holly Haynes, who built a seven-figure business while barely touching social media. She calls it the Anti-Social strategy, which is a bit of a joke, because what she does is deeply social.

It’s just not the scroll. We get into her three-part model of a long-form home base, an email engine, and a visibility engine, and why leads from that ecosystem convert faster than anything coming cold from an ad.

We also go deep on the part that’s newly urgent: how SEO and the emerging GEO side of things get you recommended by AI tools like ChatGPT and Claude when people search for answers, and how Holly uses AI to repurpose her work without flattening her voice into the generic content you can smell from a mile away.

She runs all of it in about twenty hours a week, with twin daughters and a family rule about a real vacation every quarter. If you’re burnt out chasing an algorithm that forgets you exist the second you log off, this conversation lays out a steadier way to be found.

For most of the last five years, the advice about how to grow a business without social media barely existed, because the only acceptable answer was to post more.

Holly Haynes couldn’t do it. She was working in the C-suite, raising young twins, and there was no realistic world in which she was hiding in a bathroom filming a reel between meetings.

So she built something else. Nine years later, that something else is a 7-figure business that runs on about 20 hours a week and survives her going fully off the grid for a week or two at a time.

The strategy she landed on isn’t new. In some ways it’s the oldest method there is. It just stopped being fashionable for a while.

Where the Anti-Social Strategy Came From

The turning point was data. Holly’s account got hacked once and she lost around 20,000 followers in a stroke.

When she sat down with her numbers, the picture was hard to argue with. The large majority of her sales were coming from email, not from the reels and carousels she’d been pouring hours into.

That reframed social media for her. It became the sidecar rather than the engine. Something she does when she feels like it, with a feed that’s mostly puppies and her girls at dance class, and stops doing entirely when she wants a break. The business doesn’t flinch either way.

How to Grow a Business Without Social Media

The name is a provocation, and Holly knows it. What she means by “antisocial” is that she’s stepped off short-form social platforms as the primary driver. What she replaced them with is more social, not less.

Her leads come from partnerships, relationships, conversations, podcasts, in-person events, and speaking. She describes most people’s marketing as a pie that’s 90% social and 10% email.

Hers is close to the inverse, with social sitting at 1-3% percent and the rest spread across blogging, podcasting, private podcasts, and a whole ecosystem she pours into deliberately. Leads from that ecosystem convert faster than anyone arriving cold from a Facebook ad.

The Three Engines

The model is simpler than it sounds. There’s a home base, an email engine, and a visibility engine.

Your home base is a long-form piece of content you own. A blog, a YouTube channel, a podcast, something that lives on or points back to your website.

Your email engine isn’t there to attract people, which is a common misunderstanding. Its job is to nurture and sell to the people who already found you.

Your visibility engine is how new people come into your world in the first place, whether that’s podcast guesting, search, or speaking.

Most people collapse these together or lean entirely on one. Keeping them distinct is part of what makes the system durable.

How Inbound Search Is Changing

Here’s the part that’s newly urgent. People aren’t scrolling for answers the way they used to. They open an AI tool and ask it a question, or they Google something and read the AI summary before they ever reach a list of links.

That shift has a name on the optimization side: GEO, the practice of getting recommended by AI tools the way SEO got you ranked in search results.

The two reward the same things. A body of long-form content, press, podcast appearances, the kind of footprint that signals you’re a real authority on a topic.

Holly’s inbound search has grown sharply over the past few months, and she credits the volume of long-form content sitting on her website. Search is now her number two source of new people, behind podcasting.

Why Personal Stories Beat Dry How-To Content

Keywords still matter, but they’re no longer the whole game. What AI search seems to reward is a real point of view, the personal specificity a generic how-to article never has.

Holly teaches her students to build what she calls a moments document. You write down five relatable things about your life that your clients can connect with.

For her, it’s leaving corporate after 22 years, raising twin daughters, the girls’ Irish dance, the quarterly family vacations. Those details thread through her content naturally, so the framework comes with a human attached.

People remember that she takes quarterly vacations. They rarely remember a tip they saw five different anonymous accounts repeat.

Using AI Without Losing Your Voice

This is where a lot of people damage their own credibility without realizing it, and it’s worth being precise about why.

Bad AI content isn’t neutral. It doesn’t read as merely mediocre. It reads as AI, and for a lot of readers that’s actively repelling.

Holly’s safeguard is sequence. Everything starts with her words, a brain dump, a voice note, a call transcript. Only after that does AI come in to summarize, format, or repurpose.

She even built a skill she named Barb, trained to flag anything that smells like AI or any place a personal story is missing. You can ask Claude or ChatGPT directly what makes writing sound like AI, then turn that into a reference document and run your drafts against it.

The throughline is what she calls slowing down to speed up. Train the system to think like you and feed it your actual language, and the output sounds like you. Skip that and hand it 50 generic hooks with no original thought, and the result is exactly the content readers have learned to distrust.

Building a Business That Holds Up Without You

The other thing AI unlocks is faster judgment about what’s actually working. Holly runs a monthly audit of where sales come from, which is how she found the nerve to turn off old funnels that were leaking subscribers. She has a tool auditing her email platform every Friday morning, flagging her best performers and her leaky funnels so she can act on them quickly.

All of this supports a way of working that she protects on purpose. Business hours roughly from ten to two. Fridays mostly clear. The last week of each month with no meetings. Seasons of sprinting in spring and fall so summer and winter can ease off.

None of it is accidental, and none of it requires her to be online constantly to keep the business alive.

Final Thoughts

The reason this conversation matters now is that the ground is shifting under how people find businesses, and the founders who notice early have an opening.

Learning how to grow a business without social media isn’t about rejecting technology. It’s about choosing durable assets over disposable ones, and building a footprint that AI search and real humans can both find long after you hit “publish.”

Pick a home base. Decide on one or two things you want to be known for. Choose a single visibility channel and give it 90 days before you judge it.

Holly’s whole point is that this is a long game, and the people willing to play it patiently end up with something that keeps working while they’re on a cruise to Alaska with the Wi-Fi turned off.

Your CEO Type helps you see where you create the most value, how you make decisions, and which work fits you best.

The goal isn’t to remove you from the business. It’s to keep you focused on the work where your expertise matters most and build the rest on purpose, so growth doesn’t require more of your time.
