You’re incredible at what you do. That’s not the question.

You’ve spent years building expertise that genuinely changes people’s lives. You show up, you do the work, you get results, and your clients sing your praises from the rooftops.

So everything should be working. And for some reason, it isn’t quite.

Here’s the thing almost nobody tells you about building authority as a coach or expert.

Being excellent at your work is necessary. It is not sufficient.

I’ve watched some of the most qualified people I know, the ones who should be getting the clients and the attention and the growth, stay stuck. Not because they lack skill. Because their expertise isn’t being reflected at the level it actually exists.

I want to show you why that happens, because once you see the actual mechanism, the fix stops being “post more” and becomes something you can actually do.

Expertise Is Necessary. But It’s Not Sufficient.

Here’s the most frustrating part that you’ve probably already experienced.

The people who are not very expert are often the most confident talking about themselves and making sales. The real experts, the educated, qualified, capable ones, are usually the ones hedging.

You know so much that it makes you afraid to put out anything that isn’t a hundred percent airtight. You don’t want to be wrong, and you definitely don’t want to mislead anyone.

So your expertise, the thing that should set you apart, actually slows you down.

Meanwhile most business advice doesn’t even address this. It just sells you the external fixes. The content templates, the webinar strategies, the things that theoretically make you more visible.

None of that helps if the real problem is sitting one level underneath it.

Inner Authority vs Outer Authority

Here’s the framework I use, and it’s the whole thing.

There are two places authority shows up in your business, and you need both.

Inner authority is who you are inside. The real question is how clearly you know who you are and who you serve at your best. Not who you are in your wounds, not who you are playing small. Who you are operating at full capacity, and who benefits most from that version of you.

Outer authority is how clearly and visibly you’re claiming that expertise in the market. How accurately your public presence reflects the authority you actually have inside.

Most experts have these two things out of alignment. Their inner authority is up here, and they’re communicating from down there.

And where the two meet is where your business actually is right now. Not where your skill is. Where the intersection is.

Why Building Authority as a Coach Is a Sequencing Problem

This is the part that reframes everything.

When your business feels stuck, it usually isn’t a skill problem. It’s a sequencing problem.

You’ve been applying external fixes to an internal misalignment. You tweaked the content and refined the message. You showed up more consistently. And for some of you, you restructured the offer, raised the price, maybe even did a whole rebrand.

And it moved the needle for a few weeks, then settled right back into that same heavy feeling.

That’s because you were building outer authority before you’d clarified your inner authority. You were optimizing the visible layer while the foundation underneath it was never set.

You can execute the marketing beautifully and still go nowhere, because you’re pointing it in a direction that was never actually yours.

The Four Expert Quadrants

When you put inner and outer authority on two axes, four kinds of expert show up. See which one is you right now. Not where you’re headed. Where you actually are today.

Building authority as a coach isn’t about being more visible. It’s about closing the gap between your inner authority and your outer authority.

The Accommodating Expert has low inner authority and low outer authority. Skilled and great with clients, but no real standards for who they serve or what they charge. They take whoever shows up, price below their expertise, and avoid any bold position that might invite criticism. The result is a business that technically makes money and never reaches its potential, run by someone slowly running out of energy.

The Hype Expert has high outer authority and low inner authority. Very loud, very confident, big promises, bank-screenshot energy. Then you get in the room and the substance isn’t there. This is the person a lot of people got burned by, because the outer authority was built on nothing real underneath.

The Hesitant Expert has high inner authority and low outer authority. This is the one that breaks my heart, because it’s the most common version of my people. Doing genuinely transformative work, changing lives behind the scenes, and still positioned at the level they felt safe claiming years ago. Either too cautious to claim what they’ve earned, or unsure how to put it into words that land.

The Sovereign Expert has high inner authority and high outer authority. The business is fully theirs, built from their wiring and their real expertise, not a blueprint they inherited. The right people find them already trusting them. It’s not about being the loudest. It’s that the outer authority finally matches the inner one.

Most of the people I work with are Accommodating or Hesitant Experts. Almost nobody starts as Sovereign. The whole point is to move there on purpose.

Why the Smartest People Get Stuck Here

Here’s what makes this especially sticky for accomplished people.

Most business coaching sells outer-authority fixes only. Better content, stronger offers, more visibility. And that gets marketed hard to smart people, because smart people are usually the best students in the room.

You follow the system and execute what you’re told. You got rewarded your whole life for doing it right.

So when the strategy doesn’t work for you, you don’t think the strategy was wrong. You think you are. You hire another coach, buy another program, get more mindset work, and push harder.

But the problem was never your execution. It’s that you were executing someone else’s blueprint, in someone else’s sequence, for someone else’s version of your business.

That’s not a you problem. It’s a foundation problem, and it’s completely fixable.

If you’ve been pulling every external lever and the heaviness keeps coming back, the issue is usually the order you’re working in. That’s the work I do with clients.

What It Looks Like to Build From Inner Authority First

I learned this in my own business, the expensive way.

The business I’d built had been built for a version of me that no longer existed. It was running on templates handed to me by people who didn’t have my life. And I knew I had grown well past it, and stayed stuck there anyway because staying felt safe.

So I closed a signature program that had earned over two million dollars since I launched it, and I rebuilt from who I actually am now.

Not the version of me from years ago. Not the version playing small because of how I’d been treated in a room I’d paid to be in. The current one.

That’s the move. You don’t start by fixing your marketing. You start by getting honest about who you are now, who you serve at your best, and whether the business reflects that. Then everything outward gets rebuilt on top of it, in order.

When you do it that way, your visibility compounds, because the right people are finally seeing the real thing instead of a careful, market-friendly version of it.

Where to Start

Look at the four quadrants again and place yourself honestly.

If you’re the Hesitant Expert, your inner authority is probably solid and your outer authority needs to catch up to it. If you’re the Accommodating Expert, both need work, and the inner comes first.

Either way, the move isn’t more visibility. It’s closing the gap between who you already are and how the market sees you. Build the inside first, then let the outside express it.

That’s what building authority actually is. Not getting louder. Getting aligned, in the right order.

Most business advice assumes everyone should sell, lead, and grow the same way. They shouldn’t.

Your CEO Type helps you see where you create the most value, how you make decisions, and which work fits you best.

The goal isn’t to remove you from the business. It’s to keep you focused on the work where your expertise matters most and build the rest on purpose, so growth doesn’t require more of your time.
